changed priorities ahead

changed priorities ahead

In about two weeks, the ftp service I use through Blogger is going to end, and I'm not sure what will happen to this space, or to the posts I've made here for the last three years, at that point. I'm looking at my options right now, but the ones I've found aren't ideal.

I'd like to keep control of how my space looks, and I don't want there to be ads. I'd like to keep my archives accessible. I'm looking at Movable Type, but I'm not sure I have the energy and time that switch would take.

I really like how sites like Martha's new workbook and Delphine Doreau's sketchbook work, and I've been wanting a way to make my site more integrated and less linear.

Any ideas/recommendations/help?

On an aside that may be interesting only to me, I just realised (prompted by a comment from Nadia) that something like the past ten posts have had pictures of buildings in them.

I'm confused: is it because it's on your own website, ohbara? Could you just switch to a blogspot address and maintain the same site essentially?

Molly: Yes, but if I switch to blogger I have less control over how things look (for instance, I can't get rid of the little bar at the top). In any case, I've been wanting to make the place reflect better the way I work, and Blogger basically requires the same kind of linear format as I have now.

There is a workaround for the top bar thing. But I know what you mean about wanting a less linear look. I have looked into wordpress, which allows you to add pages so that it looks more like a website and less blogish. I get stuck looking for a three column, plain template to start from. So here I am, still at blogger with my own domain name and a very simple layout. If you have your own domain, then your files are probably uploaded to via the ftp to your ISP like mine are. My files don't exist at blogger, they live on a server at my local ISP. I can download them all to my computer for back up and upload them somewhere else as I wish. Does this make sense?

I've been really happy with Typepad. Most of the settings/design features are flexible (especially if you are willing to spend the time to figure out how to add extra coding).

Good luck. I enjoy visiting your space.
